Adding to this international bounty, we also have hand-made Fish Pouches from Barcelona; metallic foiled Prints from Scotland Cactus Vases from Holland. Some are odd, some are slick, some are yummy – but all have been popular with you this year! Long live 2015 – we can’t wait to see what 2016 has to offer! Stay tuned…

Pantone… but not as you know it!

As colour gurus Pantone unveiled their Spring 2016 colour chart last week, I was inspired to find different, contemporary (and decidedly more playful) takes on this brand’s approach to colour. “Foodtone” is something art director David Schwen has dabbled in – producing a series of playful Pantone Pairings over the last few years from Bacon & Eggs, Carrots & Peas, Salt & Pepper and Hamburger & Fries to Mustard & Ketchup.

French artist Emilie Griottes has made deliciously styled Pantone colour boards, which look more like decadent cakes; while photographer Maria Marie has produced a series of oh-so-pinnable Pantone swatches – from Kisses and Confetti, to Sprinkles and the inimitable Washi Tape.

Handmade Type!

Inspired by the Typographic Animal Alphabet Mugs we have new on the shop this week, I wanted to share this captivating project from Tien-Min Liao that I found on Wabbaly. Not only is it beautifully put together – it explores the relationship between the lower and upper case letters wonderfully.

Tien-Min explains: “In this experiment, I drew shapes with ink on one or both of my hands, manipulating my gestures into the corresponding shape to signify an upper-case letter. Then, using the same shape on my hands, I manipulated my gesture or changed the perspective through which the shape is viewed in order to transform the upper-case letter to a lower-case of the same letter. Removing or redrawing the darkened shape on my hands is not allowed in the experiment. The only way to make the model transform from an upper-case to a lower-case (orvice versa) is changing the gestures or the perspectives.I created 26 sets of these inked shapes and drew them on my hands. Each set is made to create both an upper-case and a lower-case letter, such as A and a. I also created some italic letters, hand-writing letters and some new typefaces with the same shapes.”

You can find more of Tien-Min’s work here too… Enjoy!

New This Week… Gifts for Men & Ceramic Animal Alphabet Mugs for Kids!

Men! They’re great aren’t they? We love ’em to bits but they can be difficult to buy presents for… or at least in my experience they are! So can you imagine our squeals of delight when we came across these fab embroidered Alpine and California belts from French designers Macon et Lesquoy? I immediately got one for Rog and had a stream of friends lined up to get them for their boyfriends and partners. We could think of no better product to showcase our Gifts for Him category this Christmas – take a look at what we have, I think you’ll definitely be able to find something for those special men in your life!

We’ve also taken delivery of some wonderful English creamware Animal Alphabet mugs! Designed by Mary Kuper, brush up on your zoology as well as your A, B, C with these beautiful little pieces. Made in Stoke-on-Trent, they make perfect first ceramic mugs for kids, or are ideal for a small pick-me-up tea or coffee late in the day. Our favourite is the mischievous-looking Quail…IMG_1103IMG_1106

Alison Moritsugu

American artist Alison Moritsugu creates captivating Log Paintings which reflect on nature and man’s impact on the natural world. Currently on show at the Littlejohn Contemporary Gallery in New York, Moritsugu paints directly onto the rustic wood and explores the history of American landscapes in doing so. She gathers her canvases from trees that have naturally fallen after a storm or from people who cut them down and plan to chip them – and allows viewers to see what America was like when settlers first arrived as well as depicting the destructive effects of industrialization.

However you perceive them, they are beautiful works of art in their own right – though-provoking but also painted with great skill. A great collection and a real find thanks to Creative Boom!

Howkapow A/W 2015 Colour Palette!

This Autumn / Winter 2015 we wanted to come up with a Colour Palette that we could use across the shop in various different ways. Here is the result! We are loving aubergine, mustard, teal and poppy tones at the moment – a combination of sultry yet Wintery with some brightness in the mix too. If you like the look of this, make sure you check out our Colour Palette board on Pinterest with lots of our colour inspirations. We’re already looking forward to coming up with our Spring / Summer 2016 Colour Palette next year…howkapow-winter-colour-palette
